Step into the past and explore the city's evolution through a carefully curated collection, offering a never-before-seen glimpse into Gloucester's rich heritage. Witness how uniforms connect us to famous individuals, forgotten organisations, and key landmarks, shedding light on the profound social changes that have unfolded in Gloucester over the centuries.

In Gloucester Rugby’s momentous 150th anniversary year, the Museum of Gloucester proudly presents a rare and remarkable highlight - two iconic Gloucester Rugby caps from the club's very origins. These cherished city heirlooms have been lovingly preserved and meticulously restored, thanks to the invaluable support of the prestigious Southwest Museum Development On Display grant. They represent not only a sporting tradition but a testament to the enduring spirit and resilience of the city. Don't miss this extraordinary opportunity to witness these rugby relics up close, as they stand as timeless symbols of Gloucester's enduring passion for the sport.

Travel through time and encounter iconic garments such as the 16th-century judicial robes worn by Gloucester's pioneering female magistrate, Edith Sessions. Explore a diverse range of uniforms worn by police officers, prison wardens, water bailiffs, and midwives, each offering invaluable insights into Gloucester's history.

Marvel at the artistry of costume design luminary Janet Arnold as you delve into her pattern books and admire recreations skilfully crafted by costume maker Nivera Gilbert. These creations offer a unique glimpse into the craftsmanship of their time.

The museum is delighted to collaborate with two local artists, Katie Taylor, and Sam Bates, who are creating new artwork for the costume collection, representing their experiences of Gloucester and its communities. These pieces will provide insights into how textiles can be used to represent a person or place.

Delve into our city's rich and diverse heritage through the artistry of fabric. This extraordinary opportunity to connect with the past is free to attend, though we greatly appreciate any donations to the museum. You can register online or upon arrival at the museum to secure your free tickets.

Buttons, Badges, and Blazers offers an immersive journey through Gloucester's history at the Museum of Gloucester until 7 January 2024.
